If you are looking for ways to ensure that your teeth remain healthy and strong, there are multiple things that you can do. Most dentists recommend brushing twice a day and flossing, but there are additional measures that you can take to help promote good oral health. Here are a few of them:

Exchange sodas and coffee for tea or water.

Sodas are so acidic that they can substantially damage tooth enamel in a short amount of time. During one study, tooth enamel samples were left in a soda solution for about two days. During that time, five percent of the tooth enamel weight was dissolved by the soda. Coffee is also quite acidic. In addition, its regular use seems too deeply stain the teeth.

Tea is not as acidic as coffee or soda. In addition, it contains polyphenols that help promote good oral health by eliminating oral bacteria in the mouth. This is particularly important for people who ingest acidic substances because the oral bacteria produce additional acid that, when paired with ingested acid, increases the damage to the tooth enamel.

When tooth enamel is in the presence of acid, dissolution of important minerals occurs. This weakens the tooth material and invites tooth decay.

If tea is not a favorite drink, water can be used. Not only does water help rinse leftover food particles from the mouth. It also helps dilute any acid that may be present. In addition, due to water's ability to quickly hydrate the body, it can help prevent dry mouth. If the water contains fluoride, it also helps hardens teeth and aid in the repair of weak areas of the tooth enamel. The fluoride combines with displaced ions of phosphate and calcium to form a tooth material that is more resistant to damages from acid.

Chew gum that is sweetened with xylitol or cinnamon.

Chewing gum throughout the day helps promote the release of enough saliva to rinse away plaque and other decay-causing debris. In addition, gum that includes the natural sweetener, xylitol, is antimicrobial. Thus, as the gum is chewed, bacteria in the mouth are killed. For even greater benefits from gum, select varieties that have cinnamon flavoring. Cinnamon is also antibacterial.
